Oral hygiene is beneficial for healthy gums and teeth. It involves simple habits like brushing twice daily and regular dental checkups. However, oral health extends beyond just preventing cavities and gum disease. Extensive research has linked oral health to well-being, making it a global health concern.

Neglected tooth decay or gum issues can result in pain, diminished self-confidence, and even tooth loss. These problems can lead to malnutrition, speech difficulties, and various challenges in one’s personal, work, or academic life.

Thankfully, individuals can prevent such issues by practicing proper dental care at home and during visits to the dentist. Here are some effective strategies to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Brush Regularly but Not Aggressively

Brushing teeth twice a day and incorporating dental floss into the routine is important for maintaining optimal oral health. While most people recognize the importance of brushing, it is essential to ensure proper technique.

Effective brushing involves using small circular motions to clean each tooth’s front, back, and top surfaces. This process should take approximately 2 to 3 minutes, avoiding harsh back-and-forth motions.

Avoid excessive pressure or using a toothbrush with hard bristles, as these can harm tooth enamel and gums. Consequences may include tooth sensitivity, permanent damage to the enamel, and gum erosion. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends using a brush with soft bristles and replacing it every three months or when the bristles fray.

Use Fluoride

Fluoride, derived from the element fluorine, is widely believed to be beneficial in cavity prevention. It is a common component in toothpaste and mouthwash. However, not all dental products include fluoride; some individuals may not use it.

Research indicates that the absence of fluoride increases the risk of tooth decay, even if a person maintains good oral hygiene practices. A recent review revealed that brushing and flossing alone does not prevent cavities if fluoride is not utilized.

Numerous communities in the United States have introduced fluoride into their water supply to address this concern. Organizations like the WHO, CDC, and the ADA support this practice. Individuals can contact their local government authorities. It’s worth noting that reverse osmosis water filters remove fluoride, and those using well water should assess the fluoride levels independently. 

Floss the Teeth Daily

Flossing is important in eliminating plaque and bacteria from the spaces between teeth, which are difficult to reach with a toothbrush. Flossing also prevents bad breath by removing trapped debris and food particles. 

The American Dental Association (ADA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasize the importance of incorporating flossing into oral hygiene routines. Dental professionals commonly advise gently inserting the floss down to the gum line, then employing up-and-down motions while hugging the side of each tooth.
